Earlier this month, we launched Halcyon Search. Try it now, for free: https://app.halcyon.io/search — you can also read about why and how we built it.
Back in September, we at Halcyon shared our plans to build five data subscriptions in the coming months. If you are reading here, you’ve probably been along the journey with us: from gas power plants, to large load tariffs, to utility ratecase cost of capital, and to battery energy storage assets.
We like to hit our marks, and we are: today we announce our fifth data subscription: a new substation tracker. It’s the natural progression of what you’ve told us you want us to build, and it requires everything we’ve done so far: collecting information from every single state public utility/service commission, building AI-enabled query and search, and applying data science to make it useful.
There’s something a bit different about this tracker, however. Our two existing asset trackers, for gas power plants and batteries, are complementary for anyone building and investing in the U.S. power market, be they a hyperscaler, power producer, or investment firm. But, they also stand alone. A developer can (and will!) build a gas plant independent of a battery storage asset.
Substations, to borrow language from software engineering, are more like a dependency and therefore, are important in a different way. One cannot build a gas plant or battery energy storage system without a substation. It’s actually worth posting our internal chat on the matter:
Every generation power plant has a substation. Every BESS project connects to a substation. Large load tariffs discuss whether the utility or the customer have to pay for substations. Rate cases pay for substations. Now we can trace information across datasets, making each existing dataset more valuable since there's an ecosystem of information that ties together.
Substations are essential; they’re connective; they’re also predictive of asset development locations and timelines. I wrote about some key use cases a few weeks ago. Today, we’re sharing specifics. Give it a look — and let us know if you want to know more.

We are shipping more than just data subscriptions. We’re also shipping platform improvements:
-
Search: Find authoritative energy documents from all 50 states in one place
-
Queries: Ask questions of those documents in your own words and get cited responses
-
Agentic Alerts: Stay up-to-date on relevant information with AI-powered analysis
-
***Try it now because it’s still free but won’t be for long***
And here’s what’s coming in 2026:
- More data inside every data subscription;
- More data subscriptions launched;
- More platform features, including:
- Enabling users to augment and create new data subscriptions of their own, and
- APIs to better integrate our data into their workflows, and
- Of course, more agents. The good kind, not this kind
Oh, and we’ll be growing our team. If you are interested in the intersection of energy and AI and information and want to come build and talk to the world’s leading companies, holler at us.
Halcyon is leveling up this year and we’ve got the foundations in place to help you make better decisions and grow your business. Holler at us.
